The Microsoft licensing acronym list.

Microsoft licensing runs on a dense alphabet of agreement names, license types, and programs, and the abbreviations are used freely in quotes, audit letters, and account team conversations on the assumption that you already know them. This is the working set, expanded and defined in plain language from the buyer's side. Decode the shorthand before it is used to move a number.

Agreements and contract vehicles

CALClient Access LicenseThe right for a user or device to access a server product. The user versus device choice is a frequent source of both overspend and exposure. See user versus device CALs.
SASoftware AssuranceCoverage attached to licenses that carries upgrade rights, mobility, and other benefits. Many assumed rights depend on it being active.
PURProduct Use RightsThe historical name for the master rulebook governing how products may be used, now published as the Product Terms. See Product Use Rights explained.

Suites and editions

PAYGPay As You GoStandard rate Azure consumption with no commitment. Maximum flexibility at the highest unit price.
AHBAzure Hybrid BenefitThe right to apply eligible Windows Server or SQL Server licenses with Software Assurance toward Azure, reducing cost. See hybrid benefit.
